Communities of Miami: SOUTH BEACH
White sand and aquamarine waters. Awesome architecture. Vibrant nightlife. These are the sights that will attract you to South Beach. But don’t let the natural beauty fool you. South Beach offers so much more. It's a wonderland that nourishes all of the senses -- and it will touch your heart, too.
Location
On the southern tip of Miami Beach, you’ll find South Beach, a subtropical paradise about two square miles in area. Across Biscayne Bay, you’ll see the trademark sites of South Beach: light-colored buildings all lined up against the Pompano sand with a backdrop of the sea.
Historical Architecture
The Art Deco Historic District of South Beach, tagged "SoBe," attracts visitors and residents alike. The square-mile stretch has more than 800 buildings designed in the Art Deco, Streamline Modern and Spanish Mediterranean Revival styles. With homes built in the early 20th century, this district is noted by the National Register of Historic Places and as one of Greater Miami's special sites. The Miami Design Preservation League offers a guided tour of the eye-catching area. Thanks to the league, this spot is also toured by bicyclists and in-line skaters twice a month.
Shopping
South Beach has its own designer district on Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive. Find shops and boutiques with names like Armani Exchange, Nicole Miller, Versace and Betsey Johnson as well as locally owned stores with limited-edition merchandise.
