Communities of Miami: MIAMI BEACH

For relaxation or hot action, you can’t beat Miami Beach, where the sun rises and sets over the beautiful backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. This East Coast hot spot will warm your heart and soul with the flair of a big city. It’s a nice place to visit -- and a great place to live.

Location

On the beautiful Eastern Shore of Florida, spectacular and sophisticated Miami Beach awaits. Conveniently located near several cities, it’s about two miles from North Bay Village; less than five miles to Surfside; about five miles to Bay Harbor Island, Bal Harbor, Miami Shores and Biscayne Park; and about six miles to Miami.

History

Thousands of years ago, the Tequesta tribe discovered Southern Florida. The Tequestas were the sole residents on the coast until the 16th century, when Spanish explorers claimed the land. Several historical changes soon followed:
  • In 1821, Florida became part of the United States.
  • In the early 19th century, business-minded wreckers from the Bahamas traveled to South Florida and the Florida Keys to hunt for shipwrecks that were lost on the Great Florida reef.
  • In the 1980s and 1990s, billions of dollars were invested into the new-and-improved downtown Miami skyline.

The Lifestyle

Miami Beach features a modern transportation system and a cosmopolitan lifestyle. Residents and visitors enjoy culture, arts, sports and entertainment. You’ve got it all in Miami Beach, an international place found in the United States. Indeed, the city of Miami Beach is a hot spot for visitors and a cool place to call home.
