Communities of Miami: CORAL GABLES

Peaceful neighborhoods, a vibrant downtown, and culture with a capital C: That's the beauty of Coral Gables. This picture-perfect community is one of the most resident-friendly in America, with a growing economy and plenty of activities.

Location

Coral Gables is located near many cities. It's about two miles from South Miami, Coral Terrace and West Miami; less than five miles from Glenvar Heights and Westchester; and about five miles from Olympia Heights, Miami and Pinecrest. Coral Gables is just a 10-minute drive to the Miami International Airport, which serves both national and international travelers.

Historical Landmarks

The city is home to several historical landmarks. City Hall, the key public spot, features a unique portico and interior murals. Nearby, you’ll discover two fountains that mark the entry to the Country Club of Coral Gables Historic District. You’ll notice enchanting homes on streets with charming names. And in the heart of a Coral Gables, you’ll find an extraordinary attraction: the Venetian Pool. This lovely swimming pool is nestled behind stucco walls and wrought-iron gates. The landmark is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and features a Spanish fountain, porticos, vine-covered loggias, three-story lookout towers, and cascading waterfalls flowing into a lagoon filled with coral rock caves and a palm-tree-covered island. Other historic sites include the University of Miami, which was established in the early 20th century; Lowe Art Museum, which is on the university campus; the Gusman Concert Hall; the Bill Cosford Cinema; and the Ring Theater.

The Community

For 30 years, Coral Gables has grown as a city, which has created an economic boom. These days, Coral Gables is home to 100 multinationals, almost two dozen consulates and several trade offices. Its continual commercial expansion brings new and improved activities for residents, including dining, nightlife, live music and live theater. The economic surge has also allowed property taxes to stay low while keeping high commercialism out of the residential areas.

Shopping

Miracle Mile is the shopper’s area of Coral Gables, complete with red brick pavement, sidewalk cafes and tropical landscaping around the property. You’ll find stylish boutiques and specialty shops to take care of all of your needs, whether you’re a new or veteran Coral Gables resident. Downtown is the place for art galleries. Each month, you can enjoy Gables Gallery Night, a popular Friday event that draws crowds of people to admire artwork of both local and international artists.
